Framer CMS backup tools, side by side
Framer project version history is not a reliable CMS content backup. If an item goes missing, first check Undo and any still-published copy with our recovery guide. For keeping copies before something goes wrong, here are five options. We make FrameVault; competitor features and prices below come from their linked Marketplace listings, not hands-on tests.

Free export inside Framer
Our free FrameVault Backup plugin downloads the whole CMS as a JSON snapshot or one collection as CSV, without a FrameVault account. It runs when you open it in the Framer editor. It does not schedule backups, store a history for you, or restore downloaded files. Keep the exports somewhere safe. For automatic copies and paid restore, use the FrameVault service instead.
Open the free Framer pluginWhere FrameRewind is ahead
FrameRewind is the closest tool to ours and a good one. It can restore a single field, not only a whole item, and its Agency plan keeps a full year of history where ours keeps 180 days. For six to ten sites it also costs less: $39 a month, against $79 for our Studio plan. If you manage up to ten sites, its published plan is worth considering.
Where FrameVault is ahead
More sites on one plan: 5 on Pro instead of 3, and up to 50 on Agency instead of 10. FrameVault also sends backup-failure emails. The FrameRewind listing we checked does not state whether it offers these alerts.
After production deploys, our automated test connects a disposable Framer project, backs it up, changes and deletes articles, then restores an item and a collection. It compares the test content, IDs and order with a baseline and flags failures. This covers the test project’s fields, not every possible field type or locale, and does not exercise scheduled backups. How we test.
When a manual tool is enough
Rewind by Ollfy is free, runs in the editor and downloads snapshot files to your computer. It offers item and field restore, diffs, and migration between projects. Framer’s CMS Export gives you a CSV per collection and no way back in except a manual import. Our FrameVault Backup plugin offers JSON and CSV export, without restore. These manual tools can help before a risky edit if you save the file. The Rewind and CMS Export listings do not describe scheduled backups, and our free plugin does not provide them; a copy from last Tuesday depends on someone having saved and kept it then.
What none of them do
None of them back up components or the design canvas, and their CMS backups cover content only. FrameVault Pro, Studio and Agency also save a separate site archive of every published page. Images and files in FrameVault CMS snapshots are stored as hosted URLs, not independent copies of the files. Rewind also documents this limit. FrameVault tries to reuse an item’s original ID; if Framer requires a new ID for a deleted item, we report it so you can review references. We have not verified ID handling in the other tools.
Sources and limits
Checked 21 October 2026: FrameRewind listing, Rewind listing, and Framer CMS Export listing. Our FrameVault Backup plugin is listed separately from the FrameVault service above. Prices are in USD; per-site figures assume every plan slot is used. Features and prices can change. “Not stated” means we did not find it in that listing, not that the tool lacks it.
FrameVault details reflect our current plans and implementation. Restore requires a paid plan. Due-backup checks are scheduled every two hours with bounded capacity. Backup frequency follows your plan, and completion time can vary. Queued or failed sites can wait longer. Backups preserve content and field metadata; restore writes into an existing collection and does not recreate deleted field definitions. Confirm a tool covers your collection types, fields and workflow before relying on it.
