How to back up a Framer site
Framer does not offer a one-click export of an editable project. A backup is a combination: the built-in history, an export of your CMS, and, if you want to put pages back, a saved copy of the editable project kept outside Framer. Here is what each one covers.
The options and what they save
Version History
Built in. Framer takes snapshots of the project as you edit and lets you open an earlier one. Earlier versions are view-only, so you copy what you need and paste it into the current version. It lives inside the project, so it is not a copy you hold elsewhere.
Publish history
In site settings, under Staging & Versions, Framer lists published versions and says you can roll back to a previous one. That brings back what was published; Framer's article does not say how long versions are kept or whether CMS content is part of them.
CMS export
Export collections as CSV or JSON. This saves your content, not your pages. See the free tool and the CSV vs JSON guide.
Published-site copy
A ZIP of the published HTML keeps how the site looked. It is not an editable Framer project, so it cannot be restored into Framer.
Site archive with Restore
A scheduled copy of the editable project (pages, components, styles, code files) together with the CMS, stored outside Framer, that you can put back into the project.

A practical routine
- Back up the CMS on a schedule, not only before big changes. Collections change every day; layouts change less often.
- Save an archive of the whole project before risky work: a redesign, a client handover, an AI agent or bulk Auto Translate.
- Keep at least one copy outside Framer, so a deleted project or a lost account does not take the backup with it.
- Try a restore once on a copy, so you know the backup works before you need it.
Doing it with FrameVault
Connect a project with a Server API key. On Pro, Studio and Agency, FrameVault saves a site archive on a weekly or daily schedule: the editable pages, components, styles, code files, the CMS and a copy of the published pages. Choose an archive and click Restore to put the whole site or one page back; Undo returns the project to how it was just before. Free backs up the CMS of one site weekly.
7 days free, then $12/month. Cancel any time before day 7 and you pay nothing. Free: weekly CMS backups for one site · no card. Start free.
